de: The Doer in a Passive
By: De After a Passive
In a passive sentence, de answers the question "by whom?".
How It Works
| Active | Passive |
|---|---|
| Ana skribis la libron. | La libro estis skribita de Ana. |
| Ĉiuj amas ŝin. | Ŝi estas amata de ĉiuj. |
The old subject comes back after de. After a passive participle, de almost always shows the doer. If the sentence could be misread, fare de makes the doer clear: La infano estis forprenita fare de la patrino.
Every preposition is followed by the plain form, so a pronoun after de has no -n: de mi, de ŝi.
A tool or a means takes per: La mesaĝo estis sendita per retpoŝto. You can also leave the doer out: La mesaĝo estis sendita.
