estas + Participle in -anta

Is Doing: Estas and -anta

Level 4

Estas plus a participle makes a longer verb for an action in progress.

How It Works

Simple verbWith estas + -anta
Mi legas.Mi estas leganta.
Ŝi dormis.Ŝi estis dormanta.
Ili parolos.Ili estos parolantaj.

The compound form is useful to stress that one action goes on while another one happens: Kiam vi telefonis, mi estis manĝanta. A simple manĝis shows that less clearly.

The participle matches the subject: Ili estas dormantaj. English speakers want to say am reading, but Mi legas already covers it. Only use the long form when you need the stress. Its partner for a finished action is estas plus -inta.

Examples (4)

  1. Kiam vi telefonis, mi estis manĝanta.

When you telephoned, I was eating.

Estis manĝanta shows that the eating was going on.

  2. Dum Ana kaj Kenji estis irantaj kaj parolantaj, la pluvo komenciĝis.

While Ana and Kenji were walking and talking, the rain started.

Irantaj and parolantaj have -j for two subjects.

  3. Mi estas leganta, do ne parolu al mi.

I am reading, so do not talk to me.

    Estas leganta stresses the reading.

  4. Ŝi estis dormanta, kiam la telefono sonoris.

She was sleeping when the telephone rang.

The sleeping was going on when the ringing happened.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a finite verb after estas.

    Mi estas legas.
    Mi estas leganta.

After estas the participle, not a verb with -as, shows the action. The simple Mi legas also works.

  • Leaving out -j on the participle.

    Ili estas dormanta.
    Ili estas dormantaj.

The participle is an adjective and agrees with a plural subject.
