How It Works

ResultExampleMeaning
If it rains tomorrow, we won't go on a picnic.
If you have time, come to our house.
If you learn the lessons well, the exam will not be hard.

English says if it rains and Dari says اگر ببارد, with the subjunctive. Do not use the future with خواه inside the if clause.

اگر starts a condition. It does not mean whether. For a reported question, use

Add نـ to the subjunctive for if not: اگر نیایی، تنها می‌روم (if you do not come, I will go alone). The if clause can also come second, with no comma:

The subjunctive of بودن is باشد: اگر هوا خوب باشد، به پغمان می‌رویم (if the weather is good, we go to Paghman).

Common Mistakes

  • Using the future inside the if clause.

The if clause takes the subjunctive

  • Using اگر for whether.

اگر means if in a condition. For whether, use که آیا.
