On One Hand and on the Other
A second pair, از یک سو … از سوی دیگر, means the same thing.
How It Works
Use this pair when you weigh two sides of one question. Each half is a full statement, and a comma joins them.

طرف and سو mean "side". Pick one pair and use it in both halves: از یک سو … از سوی دیگر, or از یک طرف … از طرف دیگر.
The two halves give opposite points: one good and one bad, or one wish and one limit. Each half has its own verb, in any tense, and the two verbs can differ.
The second half can begin with اما for more weight: از یک طرف ارزان است، اما از طرف دیگر دور است. (On one hand it is cheap, but on the other hand it is far.)
When you only want to add a second point, use علاوه بر این instead. When one point cancels the other, use با این حال.

On one hand I want to go to Herat; on the other hand I have no time.
The two halves give a wish and a limit.

On one hand a car is comfortable; on the other hand the city has a lot of traffic.
از یک سو … از سوی دیگر is the same pair with سو.
- از یک طرف تابستان جلال‌آباد گرم است، از طرف دیگر میوه‌های خوش‌مزه زیاد دارد.
On one hand summer in Jalalabad is hot; on the other hand it has plenty of tasty fruit.
Each half has its own verb, است and دارد.
- از یک طرف مریم خسته بود، از طرف دیگر بسیار خوشحال بود.
On one hand Maryam was tired; on the other hand she was very happy.
Both halves can use the past tense.
- از یک طرف صنف شبانه کمک می‌کند، از طرف دیگر مرا خسته می‌کند.
On one hand the evening class helps; on the other hand it makes me tired.
The two halves give a gain and a cost.

Translating "on one hand" word for word.
در یک دست ارزان است، در دست دیگر دور است.از یک طرف ارزان است، از طرف دیگر دور است.Dari says "from one side", with از یک طرف. The word for hand is not used.
