How It Works

The first clause is a fact, so its verb is in a real tense: می‌بارید, است, بود. This is the difference from حتی اگر (even if), which takes the subjunctive for something that may happen.

The second clause needs no word for but. Say با اینکه باران می‌بارید، به میله رفتیم, with no اما before به میله.

Before a plain noun, use با وجود (see the link): با وجود باران، به میله رفتیم. With a clause, use با اینکه or اگرچه.

The clauses can swap places. The main clause then comes first, and a comma goes before اگرچه: خوب کار می‌کند، اگرچه این موتر کهنه است. Add نـ for a negative fact: با اینکه خسته نبود، کار کرد (although she was not tired, she worked).

    با اینکه is followed by a real tense, می‌بارید.

  2. اگرچه این موتر کهنه است، خوب کار می‌کند.

    Although this car is old, it works well.

    اگرچه means the same as با اینکه.

  3. با اینکه شب دیر خوابیده بودم، صبح زود بیدار شدم.

    Although I had gone to sleep late, I woke up early.

    Any real tense works, here the past perfect.

  4. با اینکه انگور گران است، همه آن را می‌خرند.

    Although grapes are expensive, everyone buys them.

    The second clause needs no word for but.

  5. اگرچه راه دور بود، پیاده به بازار رفتیم.

    Although the road was far, we walked to the market.

    A comma ends the first clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using با اینکه before a noun.

    با اینکه باران، به میله رفتیم.
    با اینکه باران می‌بارید، به میله رفتیم.

    با اینکه needs a clause with a verb. Before a noun, say با وجود باران.
