The same phrase also means "whereas" when two facts are set side by side.

How It Works

حالی means "a state", so در حالی که means "in a state in which". It joins two clauses that belong together in time or in comparison.

For "while", the clause with در حالی که shows the action that was in progress. In the past, the verb takes می‌: در حالی که چای می‌خوردیم. In the present, it takes the present tense: در حالی که در کابل برف می‌بارد، در جلال‌آباد هوا گرم است.

For "whereas", the two clauses give two facts about different people or places. A comma separates them, and the در حالی که clause can come first or last.

Dari does not build "was doing" with داشتن, even after در حالی که. The past with می‌ is enough.

Do not leave out که. The phrase is در حالی که.

  1. در حالی که چای می‌خوردیم، از میله گپ زدیم.

    While we drank tea, we talked about the picnic.

    می‌خوردیم shows that the tea was still going on while we talked.

  2. فرید در کابل کار می‌کند، در حالی که برادرش در هرات زندگی می‌کند.

    Farid works in Kabul, whereas his brother lives in Herat.

    در حالی که sets two facts side by side.

  3. او در حالی که لبخند می‌زد، نامه را باز کرد.

    Smiling, she opened the letter.

    لبخند می‌زد was going on at the same moment as باز کرد.

  4. در حالی که در کابل برف می‌بارد، در جلال‌آباد هوا گرم است.

    While it snows in Kabul, the weather in Jalalabad is warm.

    The clause with در حالی که can come first.

  5. شاگردان در حالی که به سخنان استاد گوش می‌دادند، یادداشت می‌کردند.

    The students took notes while they listened to the teacher.

    Both verbs take می‌ for two actions at the same time.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out که after در حالی.

    در حالی چای می‌خوردیم، گپ زدیم.
    در حالی که چای می‌خوردیم، گپ زدیم.

    The phrase is در حالی که, with که.

  • Building the action in progress with داشتن.

    در حالی که داشتیم چای می‌خوردیم، گپ زدیم.
    در حالی که چای می‌خوردیم، گپ زدیم.

    Dari does not use داشتن for an action in progress. The past with می‌ is enough.
