Linked Actions in Formal Prose
The first action comes first in time, and both actions belong to the same person.
How It Works
Books and news chain actions with participles. The pattern is short: participle, comma, finished verb.
| Two sentences with و | One chain |
|---|---|
| نامه را خواند و جواب داد | نامه را خوانده، جواب داد |
| دروازه را باز کرد و داخل شد | دروازه را باز کرده، داخل شد |
Both actions belong to one person, and the participle names the earlier action. You can chain more than one: نامه را خوانده، پاسخ نوشته، به پست فرستاد. The last verb carries the tense.
Speech and casual writing use و. The chain belongs to narration and news, where it keeps the text smooth and short.
The chain does not show two actions at the same time. For while, use در حالی که (see While and Whereas).
Where to meet it: reports of events, biographies and stories, where the chain keeps the actions in the order they happened. Keep each chain short, three actions at most, so the reader can follow who does what.

Common Mistakes
Using the chain when the two actions have different subjects.
باران باریده، ما به خانه رفتیم.بعد از اینکه باران بارید، ما به خانه رفتیم.The participle needs the same person for both actions. Different subjects need a conjunction.
