پس از اینکه means the same and sounds more formal.

How It Works

After قبل از اینکه, the verb is the subjunctive. After بعد از اینکه, it is a real tense, because the event is finished or certain.

The plan uses the past tense: the meal comes first, so the clause says it as finished.

Before a noun, بعد از is enough: بعد از درس (after class). Before a clause, keep اینکه: بعد از اینکه درس تمام شد.

The main clause can also come first, with no comma: به خانه رفتیم بعد از اینکه درس تمام شد. The word بعد alone means then and starts the next part: اول چای خوردیم، بعد به پارک رفتیم.

  1. بعد از اینکه نان خوردیم، چای سبز نوشیدیم.

    After we ate, we drank green tea.

    خوردیم is the simple past after بعد از اینکه.

  2. بعد از اینکه کار را تمام کردم، به خانه رفتم.

    After I finished the work, I went home.

    Two finished events follow each other, and the first one takes بعد از اینکه.

  3. پس از اینکه شاگردان رفتند، معلم در صنف ماند.

    After the students left, the teacher stayed in the classroom.

    پس از اینکه is the formal partner of بعد از اینکه.

  4. بعد از اینکه درس تمام می‌شود، با دوستانم فوتبال بازی می‌کنم.

    After class ends, I play football with my friends.

    The present tense talks about a habit.

  5. بعد از اینکه برادرم از کندز آمد، همه با هم به میله رفتیم.

    After my brother came from Kunduz, we all went on a picnic together.

    آمد is the simple past. The picnic came after his arrival.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the subjunctive for a finished event.

    بعد از اینکه نان بخوریم، چای نوشیدیم.
    بعد از اینکه نان خوردیم، چای نوشیدیم.

    The subjunctive belongs to قبل از اینکه. After بعد از اینکه, use the simple past.

  • Leaving out اینکه before a clause.

    بعد از درس تمام شد، به خانه رفتیم.
    بعد از اینکه درس تمام شد، به خانه رفتیم.

    A clause with its own verb needs اینکه.
