Time in Reported Speech
Croatian does not require the automatic tense backshift familiar from English reported speech. A present can remain present inside a report introduced by a past verb.
How It Works
Build a timeline before translating. Rekla je da radi can correspond to English “She said she was working.” The Croatian present represents the situation from the reported perspective; it is not automatically a claim about this exact moment.
Use past and future forms when the reported event is earlier or later: Rekla je da je završila and Rekla je da će nazvati. A past reporting verb does not itself demand a conditional in the future report.
Time and place words depend on the retelling situation. Replace “tomorrow” with sljedećeg dana when that is needed to avoid confusion. An explicit date can be clearer than forcing a mechanical word-for-word shift.
