Noun Gender

Level 1

Croatian nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter. Their gender affects nearby adjectives and some pronouns and verb forms.

How It Works

Compare ovaj grad, ova knjiga and ovo selo. The demonstrative changes because grad is masculine, knjiga feminine and selo neuter.

Endings provide useful clues: a final consonant often suggests masculine gender, -a often feminine, and -o or -e often neuter. They are clues rather than an exception-free rule. Noć is feminine, tata masculine and auto masculine.

Learn the noun’s gender together with its meaning. Later, its case and number will also affect agreement. The basic gender remains important even when a case ending makes the word look different.
