An Earlier Past Event

Level 5

Pluskvamperfekt combines a past form of biti with the main verb’s -l participle. It highlights that something had happened already.

How It Works

The common formation uses the perfect of biti: bio sam završio, bila je završila, bili smo završili. Both participles agree with the subject. The earlier event is understood relative to another past point.

A literary formation uses the imperfect of biti: bijaše završio. Recognize the auxiliary form rather than interpreting every phrase with bio as a passive; the main word here is an active -l participle.

Croatian also often uses the ordinary perfect when sequence words or context make the earlier event clear. The pluperfect can make the contrast explicit; it is not obligatory for every English past perfect and does not measure how many years ago something happened.
