zbog toga što + Clause

Naming a Cause Through a Clause

Level 5

Zbog takes genitive with a noun. Zbog toga što extends the causal relationship to a whole statement with its own subject and verb.

How It Works

Compare Kasnimo zbog gužve with Kasnimo zbog toga što je cesta zakrčena. The second version can name participants, time and negation inside the cause. Toga is the genitive form governed by zbog.

An integrated following cause normally has no comma before zbog toga što. If the whole causal clause comes first, put a comma after it: Zbog toga što je cesta zatvorena, idemo drugim putem.

Distinguish a cause from an intended goal. Zbog answers why something happened; purpose is commonly expressed with da or kako bi. A shorter jer-clause can express the same basic causal relationship when the extra framing is unnecessary.

Because the train was late, we missed the beginning of the performance.

  3. Sastanak je odgođen zbog bolesti.
