Basic Statement Order
Subject-verb-object is a useful neutral order for a Croatian sentence. Case endings and information structure also allow other orders.
How It Works
Ana čita knjigu. gives the person, action and affected thing in a straightforward order. It is a good starting pattern when introducing new information.
Croatian word order is flexible rather than unconstrained. An object can be moved to connect with something already discussed or create contrast. Its accusative form still identifies its role. Do not infer that the first noun is always the subject.
Short clitics impose additional placement requirements. A long opening phrase or an embedded clause can change where they fit, so freely shuffling all words is not a valid method. Learn a neutral frame first and add marked orders when their communicative purpose is clear.
