Focus Words and Their Scope

Level 6

Samo restricts alternatives, čak adds a surprising case, and upravo singles out an exact person, thing or moment. Their position and the sentence’s stress determine what receives focus.

How It Works

With samo, identify the alternatives being excluded. Došao je samo u petak limits the day, while Samo je došao can limit the action: he merely came, without doing something further.

Čak, often followed by i, presents a case as unexpected: Čak je i Ana došla. It does not claim that Ana was the only arrival. The expectation comes from context rather than from the word Ana itself.

Upravo can emphasize exact identity in upravo taj odgovor or exact timing in upravo sada. In speech, stress can refine the focus; in writing, position the word clearly and add context if two interpretations remain possible.

Examples (4)

  1. Samo Ana čita novine.

    Only Ana reads the newspaper.

  2. Ana čita samo novine.

    Ana reads only newspapers.

  3. Čak je i Marko došao na sastanak.

Even Marko came to the meeting.

  4. Tražim upravo taj odgovor.

I am looking for precisely that answer.
