naime / odnosno

Clarifying a Statement

Level 6

Naime adds an explanation that helps the reader understand an earlier statement. Odnosno can restate something more precisely or connect corresponding items.

How It Works

Use naime when the next information explains what has just been said: Ne mogu danas doći. Naime, radim do večeri. It guides the reader back to the earlier statement rather than introducing a new unrelated topic.

Odnosno can refine or correct a formulation: Sastanak je u petak, odnosno u petak ujutro. Read it as “more precisely” or “that is” when the second expression clarifies the first.

In a paired enumeration, odnosno can also mean “respectively”: Petra i Luka imaju deset odnosno osam godina. Keep the order of both lists aligned. Do not assume that every odnosno means a free choice between alternatives; the intended relation must be recoverable.

Examples (3)

  1. Ne mogu danas doći. Naime, radim do večeri.

I cannot come today. The reason is that I am working until evening.

  2. Sastanak je u petak, odnosno u petak ujutro.

The meeting is on Friday, more precisely on Friday morning.

  3. Petra i Luka imaju deset odnosno osam godina.

Petra and Luka are ten and eight years old, respectively.
