Order for Contrast
Croatian case endings allow several orders, but those orders are not equally neutral. Moving a phrase can make it a topic or a contrast.
How It Works
The usual neutral order is subject–verb–object, but discourse can place known information first and new information later. Taj sam film već gledala starts from a film already under discussion.
A contrast can also be explicit: Anu sam pozvala, ne Ivana. The object case remains visible even when it precedes the verb. Spoken stress helps establish which alternative is being corrected.
Clitics retain their own placement restrictions. Moving an object does not license putting an unstressed pronoun or auxiliary anywhere. When a contrast matters, use a complete noun or stressed pronoun where necessary and keep the sentence easy to follow.
