How It Works

Renunciar al càrrec, contribuir a la millora and acostumar-se al soroll select a as part of their construction. The phrase is not necessarily an indirect object; it may name what is renounced, supported or become familiar.

Because the function differs from a recipient, a recovered complement can take hi: hi renuncia, hi contribueix, s'hi acostuma. The reflexive s’ in the last example remains part of acostumar-se.

Before masculine articles apply al and als, but before an elided article write a l’. With an infinitive, retain the a required by the construction, as in contribuir a resoldre el problema. For a finite que clause, consult the separate formal rule rather than copying a noun pattern mechanically.
