Spelling of Stacked Weak Pronouns

Level 5

Spell a pronoun cluster as a unit, placing its apostrophe according to the whole combination.

How It Works

Pronouns keep a conventional order, but their written forms change beside vowels and other pronouns. Before a consonant, me + el becomes me'l; before a vowel, the cluster appears as me l’: me l'envia. The apostrophe is placed as far to the right as the established combination permits.

When a cluster ends in en, the neighboring vowel can move the visible apostrophe: me'n dona but me n'envia. The same grammatical combination is present in both. After a vowel-final command, dona-me'n keeps a hyphen before me and an apostrophe before n. Do not normalize these three strings to one spelling, and do not add a second apostrophe merely because the group contains two pronouns.

Examples (3)

  1. Me'n dona dos.

She gives me two of them.

  2. Me n'envia tres.

She sends me three of them.

  3. Dona-me'n quatre.

    Give me four of them.
