Singular Dative Clusters across Regional Standards

Level 6

Central-type clusters replace singular li with hi after a definite third-person direct object; Valencian commonly keeps li first.

How It Works

In the Central-type pattern, li plus el becomes l'hi, li plus la becomes la hi, li plus els becomes els hi, and li plus les becomes les hi. The final hi identifies the recipient in these combinations; it need not refer to a place.

For careful writing, retain the direct object's distinctions in a Central-type singular-dative cluster: l'hi for masculine singular, la hi for feminine singular, els hi and les hi for plurals. Informal reductions can obscure these contrasts and need not be copied into the formal model. Valencian li'l/li la/li'ls/li les remains a coherent standard alternative. Decide the recipient's number first, since plural dative requires the separate els table.
