haver-hi + en
Partitive En with Haver-hi
Combine en with haver-hi when the introduced noun is understood but its quantity remains.
How It Works
Hi ha tres pomes becomes n'hi ha tres when apples are already the topic. En replaces the noun idea, while hi stays as part of haver-hi and tres supplies the quantity. The usual written combination before the verb is n'hi.
Use the same group in other tenses: n'hi havia dues, n'hi haurà més. In the shared formal pattern, the existential verb stays singular even with a plural quantity. No comes before the whole group: no n'hi ha cap.
Do not omit the quantity when it is part of the intended answer, or replace the combination with a definite object pronoun. If the full indefinite noun remains expressed in an ordinary neutral sentence, en is not inserted automatically: hi ha tres pomes. Dislocated topics are a separate construction.
