Inclusive Drafting Choices

Level 6

Inclusive drafting can use collective nouns, person-based phrases or paired forms while preserving clear agreement.

How It Works

L'alumnat is a collective singular; les persones sol·licitants is an ordinary feminine plural phrase whose head is persones. Their agreement follows those grammatical heads, regardless of the genders of the individuals concerned.

Paired forms such as els treballadors i les treballadores can make groups explicit, but repeating every form in a long document can burden the text. Choose a clear expression suited to its purpose and audience rather than applying one universal substitution.

An epicene or collective noun does not necessarily preserve every meaning of the original term: personal, plantilla and persones candidates refer to different groups. Check that the inclusive wording still identifies the intended people, rights and responsibilities precisely.

Examples (3)

  1. L’alumnat rebrà un avís.

The student body will receive a notice.

  2. Les persones sol·licitants han de signar.

    Applicants must sign.

  3. Els treballadors i les treballadores hi participaran.

    The workers will take part.
