-ció, -ment, -atge
Nominalization Suffixes
The suffixes -ció, -ment and -atge form established nouns from verbal or related bases.
How It Works
Crear gives creació, créixer gives creixement, and aprendre gives aprenentatge. These nouns can name an action, process or result, but the appropriate suffix belongs to the word's established formation. Do not attach any of the three freely to every verb.
Gender is usually feminine for -ció and masculine for the common -ment and -atge formations taught here: la creació, el creixement, l'aprenentatge. The noun then takes ordinary article and adjective agreement.
Nominalization changes clause structure: the people acting may become a de phrase, and a verb's object may become a noun complement. Dense formal prose is often clearer if some abstract nouns are rewritten as finite verbs with explicit actors.
