Adjective Agreement with Coordinated Nouns

Level 4

A shared adjective usually takes plural agreement when it describes coordinated nouns.

How It Works

When an adjective modifies two distinct coordinated nouns, use plural agreement: una camisa i una faldilla blanques. If the nouns differ in gender, the shared adjective normally takes masculine plural: un abric i una camisa blancs.

Meaning determines the scope. In un abric i una camisa blanca, the singular feminine adjective describes only the shirt. Position alone cannot replace that distinction. Repeat an adjective when necessary to make separate descriptions clear.

Some tightly connected singular nouns can be understood as one conceptual unit, especially in fixed or abstract combinations. Treat those as a distinct reading rather than assuming that coordination always demands a mechanical plural in every expression.
