ထက်
Comparing Two Things
ထက် comes after the second thing, so the order is A က B ထက် ပို-Adj.
How It Works
English says "A is bigger than B". Burmese says "A, B-than, more-big".
| A | B + ထက် | ပို + word |
|---|---|---|
| ရန်ကုန်က | မန္တလေးထက် | ပိုကြီးတယ်။ |
| ဘတ်စ်ကားက | တက္ကစီထက် | ဈေးပိုသက်သာတယ်။ |
The first line means "Yangon is bigger than Mandalay", and the second "The bus is cheaper than a taxi".
With a describing word made of a noun and a verb, ပို goes before the verb: ဈေးပိုသက်သာတယ် (cheaper), အရပ်ပိုရှည်တယ် (taller).
For "like X more than Y", the same pattern works with the verb ကြိုက်: ကော်ဖီထက် လက်ဖက်ရည်ကို ပိုကြိုက်တယ်။
Pronouns take the creaky tone before ထက်: သူ့ထက်, ကျွန်တော့်ထက်. To ask "which is better?" you need no ထက်: ဘယ်ဟာ ပိုကောင်းလဲ။ For "the most", use အ…ဆုံး.
To say "not as … as", use လောက် with a negative: မန္တလေးက ရန်ကုန်လောက် မကြီးဘူး။ (Mandalay isn't as big as Yangon.)

- ဘတ်စ်ကားက တက္ကစီထက် ဈေးပိုသက်သာတယ်။

နည်းနည်း before ပို means "a little".
