Repeating Words

Level 2

A few doubled words are about amount or time: များများ (a lot), စောစော (early).

How It Works

English adds "-ly" to make "slowly" from "slow". Burmese says the word twice.

Describing wordDoubledExample
ဖြည်း (slow)ဖြည်းဖြည်း (slowly)ဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောပါ။
မြန် (fast)မြန်မြန် (quickly)မြန်မြန် လာပါ။
ကောင်း (good)ကောင်းကောင်း (well)ကောင်းကောင်း အိပ်ပါ။
စော (early)စောစော (early)စောစော ထမယ်။
များ (many)များများ (a lot)များများ စားပါ။
နည်း (few)နည်းနည်း (a little)နည်းနည်း စပ်တယ်။

The doubled word goes right before the verb. If the verb has an object, the object usually comes first: ရေ များများ သောက်ပါ။ (Drink plenty of water.)

After a noun, a doubled describing word adds warmth, so ထမင်းပူပူ is "nice hot rice". You will also hear doubled words in ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းက (when I was little).

Only some describing words double this way. The ones in the table are the most common, and ဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောပါ is one of the most useful requests a learner can make.

Examples (5)

  1. ဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောပါ။

    Please speak slowly.

ဖြည်းဖြည်း comes right before the verb ပြော.

  2. မြန်မြန် လာခဲ့ပါ။

    Please come quickly.

    မြန်မြန် says how to come.

  3. ညက ကောင်းကောင်း အိပ်ပျော်ရဲ့လား။

Did you sleep well last night?

ကောင်းကောင်း means "well"; ရဲ့လား is a friendly way to ask.

  4. မနက်ဖြန် စောစော ထမယ်။

    I'll get up early tomorrow.

စောစော says when, and it still comes before the verb.

  5. ရေ များများ သောက်ပါ။

    Drink plenty of water.

The object ရေ comes first, then များများ, then the verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the single word before a verb.

    ဖြည်း ပြောပါ။
    ဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောပါ။

Before a verb, the describing word is said twice.

  • Putting the doubled word after the verb, as in English.

    ပြောပါ ဖြည်းဖြည်း။
    ဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောပါ။

The doubled word comes before the verb, and the ending stays last.
