Paired Nouns from Verbs
Many pairs are fixed words, so learn them whole: အဝတ်အစား (clothes), အကူအညီ (help).
How It Works
Take two verbs that belong together, put အ before each, and you get one noun for a whole area of life.
| Verbs | Noun | English |
|---|---|---|
| စား + သောက် (eat, drink) | အစားအသောက် | food and drink |
| ဝတ် + စား (wear, eat) | အဝတ်အစား | clothes |
| ကူညီ (help), split in two | အကူအညီ | help |
| သွား + လာ (go, come) | အသွားအလာ | traffic, coming and going |
| ရောင်း + ဝယ် (sell, buy) | အရောင်းအဝယ် | trade, business |
Most of these are fixed words, so learn each pair whole. The order of the two verbs never changes: အစားအသောက်, never အသောက်အစား.
The pair is one noun, so it takes ကို, မှာ or a describing word like any other noun: မြန်မာ အစားအသောက်ကို ကြိုက်တယ် (I like Burmese food).
Each verb keeps its own အ. Dropping the second one, as in အစားသောက်, is a common slip.
