Didn't You Say?
Said with a frown, the same words become a complaint: "You said you'd come!"
How It Works
ဆို comes from the verb "say". At the end of a sentence it means "I heard" or "you said": (There's a show tomorrow, right?)
Keep the whole sentence you heard, ending and all.
| You heard | You check |
|---|---|
The meaning depends on who said it first.
- News from someone else: (I heard Ko Zaw Zaw is going to Japan).
- Words from the listener: ရှင် စောစော ပြန်လာမယ်ဆို (you said you'd come back early). This often sounds like a complaint.
To ask straight out, add (I heard you're going. Is that true?).
For passing on news without checking it, use တဲ့: ဆိုင်ပိတ်တယ်တဲ့ (they say the shop is closed). ဆို asks the listener to confirm.
Your voice carries the meaning. Said lightly, ဆို asks a friendly question. Said firmly, it reminds the listener of a promise. The words stay the same.
