въпреки + Noun
Despite
Въпреки дъжда излязохме. (Despite the rain, we went out.) The noun comes right after въпреки, with no на.
How It Works
1. The pattern. въпреки + noun, pronoun or noun phrase:
- въпреки дъжда (despite the rain)
- въпреки лошото време (despite the bad weather)
- въпреки съвета ми (despite my advice)
- въпреки него (in spite of him), with a full pronoun
2. The article. After a preposition, a masculine noun takes the short article: въпреки дъжда, not дъждът. See full versus short masculine article.
3. Fixed phrases.
- Въпреки това: "nevertheless", referring back to the previous sentence: Беше трудно. Въпреки това успяхме.
- Въпреки всичко: "in spite of everything".
4. Clause or noun? Before a verb, use въпреки че: Въпреки че валеше, излязохме. Both sentences can say the same thing: Въпреки дъжда излязохме.
5. The opposite idea. Заради and поради give the reason something happened; въпреки names what should have stopped it.
