макар и

Albeit with Макар И

Level 5Sounds Like makar i

Дойде, макар и късно. (He came, albeit late.) Макар и is followed by a word or phrase, not a full clause.

How It Works

1. What it does. Макар и is like English albeit, though or even if only. It adds a short limitation to what you say:

  • Дойде, макар и късно. (He came, albeit late.)
  • Успяхме, макар и трудно. (We succeeded, though with difficulty.)
  • Остани, макар и за малко. (Stay, even if only for a little while.)

2. What can follow it. An adverb, an adjective or participle, or a phrase with a preposition. It often opens the sentence with an adjective: Макар и уморена, тя довърши работата (Tired though she was, she finished the work).

3. With a full clause. When the concession has its own verb, use макар че or макар да: Макар че беше уморена, тя довърши работата. Compare въпреки with a noun: въпреки умората (despite the tiredness).

4. Commas. The макар и phrase is set off from the rest of the sentence: Това е решение, макар и временно, и трябва да го приемем. See commas around detached phrases.

5. Close relatives. Дори (even) adds emphasis without conceding, and колкото и да says the size of an effort does not matter.

Examples (6)

    He came, albeit late.

  2. Остани, макар и за малко.

Stay, even if only for a little while.

  3. Макар и уморена, тя довърши работата.

Tired though she was, she finished the work.

Уморена is feminine to agree with тя.

  4. Успяхме, макар и трудно.

    We succeeded, though with difficulty.

  5. Това е решение, макар и временно.

This is a solution, albeit a temporary one.

  6. Макар и малък, градът има много музеи.

Small as it is, the town has many museums.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a full clause with its own verb after макар и.

Макар и той е уморен, ще дойде.
Макар че е уморен, той ще дойде.

Макар и goes with a word or a short phrase. Before a full clause such as той е уморен, use макар че or макар да.

  • Using макар че before a phrase without a verb.

    Той дойде, макар че късно.
    Той дойде, макар и късно.

Макар че needs a clause with a verb after it. For a single word like късно, use макар и.
