заради / поради
Because of
Заради дъжда останахме вкъщи. (Because of the rain we stayed home.) Поради ремонт магазинът е затворен. (The shop is closed for renovation.)
How It Works
1. Заради: an everyday cause. Не дойдох заради лошото време. (I didn't come because of the bad weather.) It often suggests blame: Заради теб закъсняхме! (We're late because of you!)
2. Заради: for someone's sake. Останаха заедно заради децата. (They stayed together for the sake of the children.) Поради does not have this meaning.
3. Поради: a more formal cause. For a cause, it means the same as заради, but it is more common in notices, news and official letters, often with a noun without an article: поради ремонт, поради болест, поради лошо време. Fixed phrases include поради това (for that reason) and поради факта, че (due to the fact that).
4. Pronouns. After a preposition, use the full pronoun: заради мен, заради нея, never a short form.
5. Before a clause. Заради and поради take a noun, while защото takes a clause: Останахме вкъщи, защото валеше. A formal clause connector is тъй като. The formal preposition вследствие на instead takes a noun phrase.
For a good cause, благодарение на (thanks to) sounds more natural than заради: Благодарение на теб успях. (Thanks to you, I made it.)
