а
Contrastive А
А links two ideas that are different but both true: Той е лекар, а тя е учителка (He is a doctor, and she is a teacher).
How It Works
Bulgarian has three common words where English often uses just and or but:
- и adds: мама и татко (mom and dad).
- а sets two different things side by side: Аз съм от София, а ти си от Варна (I am from Sofia, and you are from Varna).
- но signals a surprise or a limit: Той е лекар, но не работи (He is a doctor, but he does not work).
Typical uses of а:
- Comparing two people or things: Той пие чай, а тя пие кафе (He drinks tea, and she drinks coffee).
(Today I work, and tomorrow I rest).
- Turning a question back: Добре съм, а ти? (I am fine, and you?)
- Starting a new but related question: А къде е гарата? (And where is the station?)
- Correcting after a negative: Това не е чай, а кафе (This is not tea but coffee). See не..., а.
In writing, put a comma before а when it joins two parts of a sentence. No comma is needed when а opens the sentence.

Common Mistakes
Using и to ask "and you?"
И ти? means "you too?", so the first sentence asks whether the other person is also from Sofia. To ask "and you?" use а ти?
Using но to correct something after a negative.
When you reject one thing and give the right one, Bulgarian uses не ..., а, never не ..., но.
Leaving out the comma before а.
А joining two parts of a sentence always has a comma in front of it.
