Fractions
Половин час (half an hour), една трета (one third), три четвърти (three quarters). The bottom number becomes a feminine ordinal, and половин never changes.
How It Works
1. Ordinary fractions.
- една трета (1/3), две трети (2/3)
- една пета (1/5), три пети (3/5)
- една десета (1/10), седем десети (7/10)
The forms are feminine because they agree with an unspoken част (part). Before a specific whole, use от and the article: една трета от града (a third of the city).
2. A quarter. The usual word is четвърт: една четвърт (1/4), три четвърти (3/4), четвърт час (a quarter of an hour).
3. Half.
- половин stands right before a noun and never changes: половин час, половин килограм, половин година.
- половина is a noun: час и половина (an hour and a half), два часа и половина (two and a half hours).
- With the article, половината means half of the: Изядох половината торта. (I ate half the cake.)
4. Decimals. Bulgarian writes a decimal comma and reads it with цяло: 2,5 is две цяло и пет. In everyday speech, две и половина is also common. For telling the time with halves and quarters, see колко е часът.

The film lasted two and a half hours.
Половина is the noun form used after и.
- Купи половин килограм сирене.
Buy half a kilo of cheese.
Common Mistakes
Using the noun половина directly before a noun.
Чаках половина час.Чаках половин час.Right before a noun, half is половин. Половина is used on its own, as in час и половина.
Using the plural ordinal after една.
Една трети от града е без ток.Една трета от града е без ток.After една the ordinal is feminine singular: една трета.
Using the singular ordinal after две or more.
Две трета от парите отиват за наем.Две трети от парите отиват за наем.After две, три and higher numbers the ordinal is plural: две трети, три пети.
