кой да е
Any at All with Кой Да Е
Add да е to a question word to mean any at all: коя да е книга (any book), където да е (anywhere).
How It Works
1. The family. Put да е after a question word:
- кой да е / коя да е / кое да е / кои да е = any (person or thing)
- какъв да е / каква да е / какво да е = any kind, just any
- където да е = anywhere; когато да е = any time
- как да е = somehow, any old way
2. Agreement. Only the first word changes, like кой, коя, кое, кои: коя да е книга, кое да е място. The да е part is written as a separate word and never changes, even in the past: Можеше да вземе коя да е книга (He could have taken any book).
3. Two shades of meaning.
- Free choice: Седни където да е (Sit anywhere). Кой да е ученик може да реши тази задача (Any student can solve this problem).
- Just any, ordinary: Не искам какъв да е телефон (I don't want just any phone). Той не е кой да е (He is not just anybody). Написа домашното как да е (He did his homework any old way).
4. Кой да е versus който и да е. Both can mean any at all: коя да е книга and която и да е книга. Only който и да can open a clause with its own verb: Който и да дойде, отвори му (Whoever comes, open the door for him).
Compare някой (someone, without saying who) and всеки (every one).

Common Mistakes
Not making кой agree with the noun.
Дай ми кой да е книга.Дай ми коя да е книга.Книга is feminine, so the pronoun must be коя. Only да е stays the same.
Using кой да е to open a clause with its own verb.
Кой да е дойде, отвори му.Който и да дойде, отвори му.To say whoever comes, use който и да with the verb. Кой да е only goes with a noun or stands for one.
