дори и да
Even if
Дори и да вали, ще дойда. (Even if it rains, I'll come.) The condition is mentioned only to say that it makes no difference.
How It Works
1. A real possibility. Use the present tense after да, usually perfective for a single event. The main clause is often in the future or a command:
- Дори и да вали, ще дойда. (Even if it rains, I'll come.)
- Дори и да закъснееш, пак ела. (Even if you're late, come anyway.)
2. An imaginary situation. Use the imperfect after да, and щях да or нямаше да in the result:
- Дори и да знаех, нямаше да ти кажа. (Even if I knew, I wouldn't tell you.)
This follows the same tense pattern as unreal conditions with ако.
3. Shorter forms. Дори да and даже и да are equally correct. In speech, и да alone is very common: И да искам, не мога. (Even if I want to, I can't.)
4. Compared with ако and въпреки че. Ако gives a condition that the result depends on. Дори и да says the result holds either way. Въпреки че talks about something that is actually true: Въпреки че вали, ще дойда. (Although it is raining, I'll come.)
5. Commas and ще. Separate the clause with a comma. Never put ще after да.
