Също means also or too. It usually goes before the verb: Аз също съм студент (I am a student too).

How It Works

Position. Put също after the subject and before the verb or before съм:

  • Аз също съм студент. (I am a student too.)
  • Ние също живеем в София. (We live in Sofia too.)

Negatives. Също comes before не, and together they mean either: Аз също не знам. (I don’t know either.) See не + глагол.

Short replies. For me too, Bulgarians usually say И аз. For me neither, they say И аз не. Аз също works as well. See и.

Adding one word. Compare these two sentences:

  • Тя също говори английски. She speaks English, like someone we mentioned.
  • Тя говори и английски. She speaks English in addition to other languages.

To add a single word, put и or също и right before it: Поканихме също и Мария. (We invited Maria too.)

Също така means also, as well and often links one point to the next: Също така искам да попитам... (I would also like to ask...)

Common Mistakes

  • Putting също at the end, like English too.

    Аз съм студент също.
    Аз също съм студент.

    Bulgarian puts също before the verb. At the very end of the sentence it sounds like a word-for-word translation from English.

  • Putting не before също.

    Аз не също знам.
    Аз също не знам.

    Не must stand right before the verb, so също comes first: също не знам.
