The Hidden Vowel
কৰ “do” is said kôr. The ô after ক is said, and the ô after ৰ is dropped.
How It Works
The vowel ô sounds like the o in “hot”. It is written with no mark at all, so a bare consonant letter means that consonant plus ô.
| Word | Said | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| কৰ | kôr | do |
| ঘৰ | ghôr | house |
| কলম | kôlôm | pen |
| মন | môn | mind |
| ফল | phôl | fruit |
In ঘৰ the first consonant keeps its ô and the second loses it. In কলম the first two keep it and the last loses it. A word that ends in a vowel sign, such as ভাষা, keeps that vowel.
A few words keep the final ô, so listen for it when you learn a new word.

How It Connects
Learn This First
