Counting Women and Girls with -জনী

Level 1Sounds Like ējanī / dujanī

Number plus -জনী counts women and girls: তাই এজনী সাংবাদিক “she is a journalist”.

How It Works

-জনী is the classifier for female people. It goes with a number, and the person word follows.

NumberWith -জনীExample
1এজনীএজনী ছাত্ৰী “a girl student”
2দুজনীদুজনী ছোৱালী “two girls”

The verb does not change for a woman or a man. The familiar pronoun (সি or তাই), the classifier and some nouns, such as ছাত্ৰ and ছাত্ৰী, show the difference.

-জনী also counts a female animal, as in এজনী কুকুৰ “a female dog”. Use এটা for objects and এজন for men.

Bigger numbers follow the same plan: তিনিজনী ছোৱালী “three girls”.

The question word is কেইজনী “how many women”.
