এডাল / দুডাল
Counting Long Things with -ডাল
-ডাল counts long, thin things: ৰফিকুলে এডাল টাই পিন্ধিব “Rafiqul will wear a tie”.
How It Works
Counting words in Assamese depend on the shape of the thing.
| Thing | Example |
|---|---|
| tie | এডাল টাই “a tie” |
| tree | এডাল পুৰণি গছ “an old tree” |
| snake | সেইডাল সাপ “that snake” |
| pen | দুডাল কলম “two pens” |
In সেইডাল এডাল পুৰণি গছ “that is an old tree”, the first word is সেই “that” with -ডাল and the second is “one” with -ডাল.
A short, round or flat thing takes another counting word, such as -টা or -খন. Avoid -ডাল for people, since it can sound rude.
Trees can also be counted with -জোপা, as in এজোপা গছ “a tree”.
