ChatGPT is the AI assistant made by OpenAI.
Which ChatGPT Tools Help You Learn a Language?
All five tools work on the free plan, and voice and uploads have limits.
| Tool | What It Does for You | On the Free Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Custom instructions | Tells every new chat your language and level | Yes, up to 1,500 characters |
| Study mode | Asks you questions and checks your answers | Yes, on the web, iPhone, and Android |
| ChatGPT Voice | Lets you speak and hear a spoken reply | Limited use, and OpenAI says the limits may change |
| Projects | Keeps chats, files, and instructions in one place | Yes, with up to 5 files in each project |
| File uploads | Reads a document or a photo you add | Up to 3 uploads a day |
How Do You Set ChatGPT Up for a Language?
Use custom instructions. You'll find them in Settings, under Personalization, and OpenAI says they apply to all your chats right away.
Fill in the boxes, copy the text, and paste it there. The language you type here also fills in the prompts further down.
I'm learning Spanish, the way it's spoken in Mexico. My first language is English. I can read short texts about everyday life. When I write in Spanish, answer in Spanish with short, simple sentences. When I ask a question in English, answer in English.
When your level goes up, change the description, and your next chat will use the new one.
Which Prompts Work Well in ChatGPT?
Quiz Yourself in Study Mode
Study mode asks questions and waits for your answer. On the web, type @study in the message box, or pick Study from the + menu. OpenAI's page says study mode doesn't work inside projects, so start this one in a normal chat.
I'm learning Spanish. Quiz me on the past tense of common verbs. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. If I'm wrong, give me a hint first, and show the answer only if I miss it again. After ten questions, tell me which ones to practice more.
Talk Out Loud in ChatGPT Voice
Tap the Voice icon in the message bar to start. OpenAI's page says you can ask ChatGPT to talk faster or slower, and to wait until you ask it to respond.
Let's talk in Spanish about my favorite food. Speak slowly and use short sentences. Ask me one question at a time, and wait until I say "Your turn" before you answer. If I use a word from English, tell me the Spanish word and keep going.
After the call, a transcript appears in the chat. OpenAI says it may not match what was said word for word, so treat it as notes.
Read a Photo of a Page
Take a photo of something you want to read, like a street sign or a recipe, and attach it to your message.
This photo shows a Spanish menu. Read the text in it back to me, line by line. For each line, give the meaning in English and point out one useful word. Then ask me two questions about the text in simple Spanish.
For one language at a time, see the prompts made for Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, English, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Vietnamese, and Korean.
What Does OpenAI Say to Check?
OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT can be wrong and still sound confident. Its examples include incorrect definitions and made-up quotes, and its advice is to use ChatGPT "as a first draft, not a final source."
- Check Each New WordBefore a new word goes on your list, find it in a dictionary and read one of its example sentences.
- Open the Cited LinksOpenAI's page says ChatGPT can search the web and cite its sources. When it does, open the links and read them yourself.
