How to Learn a Language with Claude

Quick answer

Make a Claude project for the language you're learning, and put your level and word list in its instructions. Then ask Claude to read a text with you, to help you find a grammar rule, or to talk with you in voice mode. Check what it tells you, because Anthropic says not to rely on Claude as your only source.

Claude is the AI assistant made by Anthropic. It can read a text you upload and talk with you out loud.

How Well Does Claude Know Your Language?

It depends on the language. Anthropic had professional translators put the same test questions into 14 other languages, and gave each score as a percentage of the English score.

LanguageClaude Haiku 4.5 (With Extended Thinking), Compared to English
French95.7%
Japanese93.5%
Korean93.3%
Hindi92.4%
Swahili78.3%

These scores come from a knowledge test. When your language sits lower in the table, check more of Claude's answers.

Anthropic's developer page gives two tips that also work in a chat. Name the language you want Claude to answer in, and paste text in its own script.

How Do You Set Claude Up for a Language?

Make a project. A Claude project groups your chats, and its instructions apply to every chat inside it. Anthropic says projects work on every plan, and a free account can have up to five.

Fill in the boxes, then paste the text into the project's instructions, and add a text file with your word list to the project's knowledge. The language you type here also fills in the prompts below.

I'm learning Spanish. My first language is English. Right now I can read short messages and simple stories. The file in this project lists the words I know or I'm learning. Answer in Spanish unless I ask in English, write in the Latin alphabet only, and use words from my list where you can. When you use a word that's not on the list, add its meaning in brackets.

When your word list changes, replace the file, and new chats use the new list.

Which Prompts Work Well in Claude?

Start each of these in a new chat inside your project, so Claude already knows your level.

Read a Text You Uploaded

Claude can read files you upload, including PDF, EPUB, and text files. Use a chapter, an article, or a worksheet you already have.

I uploaded a Spanish text I'm reading. Go through the first paragraph with me, one sentence at a time. For each sentence, ask me what I think it means, then tell me what I got right and what I missed. Stop after the paragraph, and list five useful words from it.

Find a Grammar Rule Yourself

A rule you work out from examples is easier to remember.

I want to understand when to use the preterite or the imperfect in Spanish. Show me six short Spanish sentences that use it. Don't tell me the rule yet. Ask me what pattern I notice, let me guess, and then explain the rule in plain English.

Talk Out Loud in Voice Mode

Voice mode lets you speak to Claude and hear its answer. Anthropic's page says it works on every plan, on iPhone and Android, in Claude Desktop, and on the web, and that it's made mainly for your phone. Anthropic calls voice mode a beta, and it says support for languages other than English is in beta as well.

Let's have a spoken conversation in Spanish. Ask me one question at a time about my weekend, and keep your answers to two short sentences. If I mix in English, answer the question anyway, and tell me the Spanish word I was looking for.

On your phone, tap the sound-wave icon next to the microphone where you type. On the web or the desktop, it's in the lower right corner of the chat window.

What Does Anthropic Say to Check?

Anthropic says Claude can give answers that are wrong or misleading, and that you shouldn't rely on it as your only source. Its help page adds that Claude can show quotes that sound convincing but aren't true.

  • Look Words UpCheck each new word in a dictionary for your language before you add it to your word list.
  • Ask for the Rule's NameWhen Claude explains grammar, ask what the rule is called. Then you can find the same rule in a grammar book and compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Claude for Language Practice on the Free Plan?

Yes. Anthropic's pages say projects and voice mode are both on the free plan, with up to five projects. Voice chats count toward the same usage limits as typed chats.

Can Claude Read a Long Book I Upload?

It can take a PDF of up to 1,000 pages, but Anthropic says it reads pictures and charts only in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer. For a long book, upload one chapter at a time, so each chat stays on the part you're reading.

Which Language App Should a Beginner Choose?

If you are serious about learning a language, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like.

Is Bubblegum Free?

Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
