How to Learn Spanish with ChatGPT

Quick answer

Tell ChatGPT which Spanish you want, Spain's or Latin America's, and whether to use tú or usted. Ask it to explain ser and estar in your own sentences, and to fix your past tenses. Ask which countries use each new word, since a normal word in Mexico can sound odd in Spain.

Spanish is spoken in many countries, and they don't all use the same words. In Spain, you say vosotros to a group of friends, and in Latin America you say ustedes to any group. A bus is an autobús in Spain, a camión in Mexico, and a colectivo in Argentina. ChatGPT can mix these unless you name a country, so the prompts below ask for one. Type it once, and the reading, market, and writing prompts all use it.

Which ChatGPT Prompts Work for Spanish?

Read Spanish from One Country

Name a country, so the words and the way people say "you" stay the same all the way through.

I'm learning Spanish as it's spoken in Mexico. I can read short sentences in the present tense. Write a short text of 6 to 8 sentences about a day at the beach, the way someone from there would write it. Use tú when you talk to the reader. Use these words: playa, arena, ola. Under the text, list the new words with their English meanings.

Ask About Ser and Estar

Both verbs mean "to be," and learners often pick the wrong one. Paste a sentence and ask why it uses the verb it does.

Here is a Spanish sentence: "La sopa está fría." Does it use ser or estar? Tell me why that verb fits here, and what would change if I used the other one. Then give me three short sentences of my own to fill in with ser or estar, and wait for my answers before you check them.

Shop at a Market

Pick a place you'll really go. A market is a good place to practice numbers and prices.

Let's role-play in Spanish. You sell fruit at a market in Mexico, and I'm buying fruit for the week. Talk the way people there talk, in short sentences. Wait for my reply each time. Ask me how much I want and tell me the price. When I've paid, tell me which numbers I got wrong.

You can do this role-play out loud in ChatGPT Voice. If the seller talks too fast, say so, since OpenAI's help page says you can ask ChatGPT to speak more slowly. Its Live option has two Mexican Spanish voices, Tinta and Arrullo.

Correct Your Past Tenses

The preterite says what happened, and the imperfect says what was going on. Write about your weekend, and ask ChatGPT to check both.

I'm learning the Spanish of Mexico. I wrote this about last weekend: "Paste what you wrote here" Correct it, using words from that country. Pay attention to the preterite and the imperfect, to accents, and to whether nouns and adjectives agree. For each fix, show my version, the fixed version, and one reason in plain English. Keep my choice of tú or usted.

How Do You Check ChatGPT's Spanish?

Before a word goes on your list, check what it means and where people use it. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT "might sound confident—even when it's wrong."

  • Use the RAE DictionaryThe Royal Spanish Academy's free online dictionary explains each word in Spanish. Some meanings carry a label for the country that uses them.
  • Ask Where a Word Is UsedWhen ChatGPT gives you a word, ask which countries use it. If the answer is only Spain or only Mexico, decide if that's the Spanish you want.
  • Watch the Accent MarksAn accent mark can change a word. Esta means this, and está means is. Ask ChatGPT to point out any word where an accent mark changes the meaning.
  • Ask for Usted TooAsk ChatGPT to rewrite a line with usted, so you can see which verbs change when you speak politely.
