ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can write, explain, and hold a conversation in many languages, so each one can be a reading partner and a practice partner. What you get back depends on the prompt. A good prompt says what you can already read, which words you're learning, and what you want back.
Which Prompts Work for Learning a Language?
The five prompts below each do one job. Copy one, replace the words in brackets, and paste it into a new chat.
Write a Story at Your Level
Describe what you can read in your own words, and give the chatbot the words you're learning right now.
I'm learning [language]. I can read [describe it, for
example: short, simple sentences about everyday things].
Write a story of about 120 words in [language] about
[topic]. Use these words I'm learning: [word, word, word].
Use common words for everything else, with no more than
one new word in each sentence.
After the story, list the new words with their meanings
in English.
Explain a Sentence
Use this when a sentence in a book, a show, or a message doesn't make sense to you.
Explain this [language] sentence to me in English:
"[paste the sentence]"
Give the meaning of each word as it's used here. Then
explain the grammar in one or two plain sentences. If
the sentence sounds formal, slangy, or regional, say so.
Quiz Yourself on a Text You Chose
Paste an article, a song, or a page you're reading, and the questions stay inside words you've already seen.
Here is a [language] text I'm reading:
"[paste the text]"
Ask me five questions about it in [language], one at a
time. Use only words from the text. Wait for my answer
before you ask the next question, and tell me whether
I understood the text correctly.
Practice a Conversation
Swap the café for a job interview or a call to a landlord.
Let's practice a conversation in [language]. You are a
server at a café, and I'm a customer ordering a drink
and something to eat. Keep your lines short and simple.
Say one line, then wait for my reply. After eight turns,
stop and show me what I could have said more naturally.
Correct Your Writing
Asking for a reason turns each correction into something you can use next time.
Here is something I wrote in [language]:
"[paste your text]"
Correct it. Show my sentence, then your version, then
one short reason for each change. Keep my meaning and
how formal I was. Leave correct sentences as they are.
If you're learning Korean, our prompt builder makes a longer lesson prompt for any topic, with an optional translation and word list. Learn Korean with K-pop and ChatGPT does the same for song lyrics.
What Should You Check in a Chatbot's Answers?
Check every new word and grammar rule in a dictionary or a grammar book, because all three companies say their chatbots can be wrong. OpenAI's help page lists "incorrect definitions" among ChatGPT's possible mistakes, and Anthropic's and Google's pages give the same warning for Claude and Gemini. How well a chatbot does also depends on the language. On Anthropic's own test, Claude Haiku 4.5 scored 96% of its English result in Spanish and 53% in Yoruba.
- Rules Can Be WrongA chatbot can state a grammar rule confidently and still get it wrong, or write a sentence that sounds unnatural. Look up the rule in a grammar book, and ask a teacher or a speaker about a sentence that seems odd.
- The Level Can DriftOver a long chat, the text can get harder or easier than you asked. If it does, paste your first prompt again, or start a new chat.
- Keep Your Own Word ListKeep a list of the words you're learning, and paste it into each new chat. That way the chatbot knows which words are new to you.
- Ask for Your VarietyA chatbot may answer in the standard form of a language, even when you're learning a regional variety such as Egyptian Arabic. Paste a few lines written in the variety you want, and add “Write the way this sample is written.”
Can You Talk With a Chatbot Out Loud?
Yes, all three have a voice feature where you speak and hear the reply. This table describes each one as its help page did on October 14, 2026.
| Chatbot | Voice Feature | Where It Works |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | ChatGPT Voice: you speak and hear a spoken reply, and the chat keeps the text | Web, iPhone, and Android, with a usage cap on the free plan |
| Claude | Voice mode, in beta: you speak and hear a spoken reply, and languages other than English are in beta too | Web, desktop, iPhone, and Android, on every plan |
| Gemini | Gemini Live: you talk without typing, and Gemini answers out loud | The Gemini mobile app on iPhone and Android, not the web app |
Use the role-play prompt above in a voice chat to practice out loud.
Where Does a Language App Fit?
In a chat, you bring your level, your word list, and a topic each time. Bubblegum is a language app that keeps those for you, and Poppy, its AI tutor, writes the lessons.
Bubblegum
Bubblegum is the best app for serious learners. You learn from text and audio you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
Pick a topic, and Poppy writes a lesson at your level that you can read and hear, so there's no prompt to write.
- Words you save come back in new lessons, so you review them by reading.
- You can ask Poppy about any sentence while you read.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- Bubblegum can't help you read a text you found yourself. For an article or a song you already picked, use the prompts above.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chatbot Check My Pronunciation?
The voice help pages for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini don't say that the voice feature scores or corrects your pronunciation. For feedback on how you sound, practice with a teacher or a speaker who can listen to you.
How Often Should I Practice With a Chatbot?
Spread a few sessions across your week, for example three to five hours a week in sessions of at least 15 to 30 minutes. Start each session in a new chat with your word list, so the text stays at the level you set.
Which Language App Should a Beginner Choose?
If you are serious about learning a language, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or, if you already follow a course, use the prompts on this page for extra reading and practice between lessons.
Is Bubblegum Free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
