A Korean sentence changes its ending with the person you're talking to, so the same "I'm going home" can end in 가요, 갑니다, or 가. That's why a Korean prompt for ChatGPT should name the style you're practicing. The prompts below use the polite 해요 style, the one you'd use with a shop clerk or a new coworker.
Which ChatGPT Prompts Work for Korean?
Read Korean at Your Level
Tell ChatGPT that you read Hangul, which speech level to use, and which Korean words you know.
I'm learning Korean. I can read Hangul, and I can follow short polite sentences about my day. Write 6 to 8 sentences in Korean about a trip to the market. Use the polite 해요 style in every sentence. Put these words in the reading: 시장, 과일, 싸다. Write in Hangul only, spaced the way Korean is normally written. Under the reading, give each new word in its dictionary form with its English meaning.
Ask About Particles and Endings
Much of Korean grammar is in the particles after nouns and the endings on verbs, so ask about those one by one.
Explain the grammar in this Korean sentence: "저는 커피를 좋아해요." Name each particle and verb ending, and say what it does in this sentence. If the sentence uses 은/는 or 이/가, tell me why that one fits here. Then give me two new short sentences with the same pattern. Answer in English in under 150 words.
Role-Play at a Convenience Store
Pick a place you'll really go, and keep the speech level fixed so you hear one style at a time.
Let's role-play in Korean. You work at a convenience store in Seoul, and I'm buying a snack and a drink. Speak to me in the polite 해요 style, in short sentences, and wait for my reply each time. If I slip into casual speech, keep going, and tell me when we finish. After ten turns, list three phrases from our chat that I can use again.
In ChatGPT Voice, you can say your replies out loud. OpenAI's help page says that choosing the language you usually speak, under Settings → Voice → Language, helps ChatGPT understand your speech more accurately.
Get Your Writing Corrected
Ask for the reason behind each fix, and ask about spacing too, since Korean puts a space after each word, and the particles stay attached to the word before them.
Check this Korean text I wrote: "Paste what you wrote here" Look at particles, verb endings, spacing, and whether I stayed in one speech level. Make a table with three columns: what I wrote, the fixed version, and why, in one English sentence. Skip any sentence that is already right.
For longer prompts, Bubblegum's Korean prompt page builds them for you. It has one for a lesson about any topic, one for a Korean text you found, one for a word you want to remember, and one for TOPIK II writing practice.
How Do You Check ChatGPT's Korean?
When ChatGPT states a grammar rule, ask where the rule comes from, then check it. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT can give a wrong meaning for a word and still sound sure.
- Use a Korean DictionaryThe Korean-English Learners' Dictionary from the National Institute of Korean Language gives English meanings.
- Check the StyleCheck that each reply stays in the speech level you asked for. If a line ends in -ㅂ니다 or -습니다, like 갑니다, or in casual speech, ask ChatGPT to rewrite that line in the 해요 style.
- Keep Your Level in a ProjectA ChatGPT project keeps chats, files, and instructions together, and OpenAI says projects work on the free plan too. Add your word list and your level once, and every chat in it can use them.
- Check the SpacingAsk ChatGPT to put a slash between the words of a sentence it wrote, so you can see which particles attach to which word.
