Would Have: Baswn I Wedi

Put wedi after baswn i or byddwn i to say "would have": Baswn i wedi dod — I would have come.

How It Works

Positive

  • Baswn i wedi dod. / Byddwn i wedi dod. — I would have come.
  • Basai hi wedi hoffi hynny. / Byddai hi wedi hoffi hynny. — She would have liked that.
  • The North often shortens it: 'Swn i wedi dod.

Negatives and questions soften (see Faset ti? / Faswn i ddim):

  • Faswn i ddim wedi mynd. / Fyddwn i ddim wedi mynd. — I wouldn't have gone.
  • Fasech chi wedi prynu'r tŷ? / Fyddech chi wedi prynu'r tŷ? — Would you have bought the house?

With "if". The if-part uses taswn i or pe bawn i + wedi:

  • Taswn i wedi gwybod, baswn i wedi dod. — If I'd known, I'd have come.
  • Pe bai hi wedi gofyn, byddwn i wedi helpu. — If she had asked, I would have helped.

Should have and could have use a different pattern: Dylwn i fod wedi ffonio.

Careful: byddwn i wedi (I would have) is not the same as byddwn ni wedi (we will have) — see bydda i wedi.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding yn before wedi.

    Baswn i'n wedi dod.
    Baswn i wedi dod.

    Wedi takes the place of yn. Never use both.

  • Saying byddwn ni when you mean "I would have come".

    Byddwn ni wedi dod.
    Byddwn i wedi dod.

    Byddwn i means "I would"; byddwn ni means "we will". The pronoun after it tells you which.
