roeddwn i wedi

Had Done: Roeddwn I Wedi

Level 3

To say what had happened, use the past of bod with wedi: Ro'n i wedi bwyta (I had eaten).

How It Works

Pattern: roeddwn i / ro'n i ... + wedi + verb-noun.

  • Ro'n i wedi bwyta — I had eaten
  • Ro't ti wedi mynd — you had gone (South course; North course: roeddet ti)
  • Roedd hi wedi gadael — she had left
  • Ro'n ni wedi clywed — we had heard (South course; North course: roedden ni; everyday Northern speech often says oeddan ni)
  • Ro'n nhw 'di gorffen — they had finished (South course; North course: roedden nhw)

For all the forms of the past of bod, see roeddwn i.

An earlier past. Use it for something that happened before another past event: Pan gyrhaeddais i, roedd y trên wedi mynd (When I arrived, the train had gone).

Questions and negatives work as usual; see oeddet ti and doeddwn i ddim:

  • Oeddet ti wedi bod yno o'r blaen? — Had you been there before? (Oeddwn / Nac oeddwn)
  • Doedden ni ddim wedi clywed — we hadn't heard
  • Doedd hi erioed wedi bod yno — she had never been there; see erioed and byth

This is the past version of bod + wedi + verb-noun. Formal written Welsh also has one-word forms such as prynaswn (I had bought); see literary pluperfect -aswn.

Examples (6)

  1. Ro'n i wedi bwyta yn barod.

    I'd already eaten.

Ro'n i is the spoken form of roeddwn i.

  2. Roedd hi wedi gadael cyn hanner nos.

    She had left before midnight.

  3. Pan gyrhaeddais i, roedd y trên wedi mynd.

When I arrived, the train had gone.

The earlier event uses roedd ... wedi.

  4. Oeddet ti wedi bod yno o'r blaen? Nac oeddwn.

Had you been there before? No.

Answer with oeddwn / nac oeddwn.

  5. Doedden ni ddim wedi clywed y newyddion.

    We hadn't heard the news.

    Negative: doedden ni ddim wedi.

  6. Ro'n nhw 'di gorffen erbyn pump.

    They'd finished by five.

Speech shortens wedi to 'di. Ro'n nhw is the South course form; the North course has Roedden nhw 'di gorffen erbyn pump.

Common Mistakes

  • Using yn and wedi together.

    Ro'n i'n wedi bwyta.
    Ro'n i wedi bwyta.

Wedi takes the place of yn, so there is no 'n.

  • Softening the verb-noun after wedi.

    Roedd hi wedi fynd.
    Roedd hi wedi mynd.

    Wedi causes no mutation.
