i fod i

Supposed to: I Fod I

Level 3

To say someone is supposed to do something, put i fod i after bod: Roedd hi i fod i ddod (She was supposed to come).

How It Works

Pattern: bod + (i) fod i + soft-mutated verb-noun.

  • Dw i fod i weithio heddiw — I'm supposed to work today
  • Roedd hi i fod i ddod — she was supposed to come
  • Mae'r trên i fod i gyrraedd am ddeg — the train is supposed to arrive at ten

No yn. Like wedi and newydd, i fod i replaces the yn after bod. See bod + wedi + verb-noun and newydd + soft mutation.

Soft mutation. The last i is the preposition "to", which softens the verb-noun after it; see am ar at dan dros drwy gan heb i o wrth + soft mutation.

Questions and negatives use the usual forms of bod: Beth dw i fod i wneud? (What am I supposed to do?), Dych chi ddim i fod i barcio yma (You're not supposed to park here), Oedd e i fod i ffonio? (Was he supposed to phone?).

Compare dylwn i (should) and mae rhaid i (must).

Examples (6)

  1. Dw i fod i weithio heddiw.

    I'm supposed to work today.

Speech: fod i after dw i. Gweithio softens to weithio.

  2. Roedd hi i fod i ddod.

    She was supposed to come.

    Dod softens to ddod.

  3. Beth dw i fod i wneud?

What am I supposed to do?

    Gwneud softens to wneud.

  4. Dych chi ddim i fod i barcio yma.

You're not supposed to park here.

    Parcio softens to barcio.

  5. Mae'r trên i fod i gyrraedd am ddeg.

The train is supposed to arrive at ten.

    Cyrraedd softens to gyrraedd.

  6. Ro'n i fod i ffonio Mam.

I was supposed to phone Mum.

    Ff does not change.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding yn before i fod i.

    Dw i'n fod i weithio.
    Dw i fod i weithio.

I fod i takes the place of yn, so there is no 'n.

  • Forgetting the soft mutation at the end.

Roedd hi i fod i dod.
Roedd hi i fod i ddod.

The i before the verb-noun causes soft mutation: dod → ddod.
