newydd + Soft Mutation
Just Done: Newydd
To say something has just happened, put newydd where yn or wedi would go: Dw i newydd fwyta (I've just eaten).
How It Works
Pattern: bod + newydd + soft-mutated verb-noun.
- Dw i newydd fwyta — I've just eaten (bwyta)
- Mae'r trên newydd adael — the train has just left (gadael)
- Dyn ni newydd gyrraedd — we've just arrived (cyrraedd)
Compare the three: Dw i'n bwyta (I'm eating), Dw i wedi bwyta (I've eaten), Dw i newydd fwyta (I've just eaten). See bod + wedi + verb-noun.
Had just. With the past of bod: Roedd hi newydd fynd (She had just gone), Ro'n i newydd gyrraedd adre pan ffoniodd hi (I'd just got home when she phoned). See roeddwn i wedi.
Questions use the usual forms of bod: Ydy'r plant newydd godi? (Have the children just got up?)
Newydd = new. After a noun, or after yn, newydd is the ordinary adjective "new": car newydd (a new car), Mae'r car yn newydd (The car is new). So Dw i'n newydd means "I'm new". Other words that replace yn are ar fin (about to) and heb + verb-noun (haven't).
