-sin deb

So That: -sin Deb

Level 4

Clause with -sin + deb, then the main action = so that...: Bolalar eshitsin deb, baland gapirdi (He spoke loudly so the children would hear).

How It Works

Use -sin deb to say why someone did something when the goal is about another person or thing.

1. Building it
Put the verb of the purpose clause in the -sin form and add deb. The main clause follows:

  • Hamma koʻrsin deb, eʼlonni eshikka yopishtirdim (I stuck the notice on the door so that everyone would see it).
  • Negative -masin deb: Gullar soʻlmasin deb, har kuni suv quyaman (I water the flowers every day so that they do not wilt).

The tense is carried only by the main verb at the end.

2. When the goal is your own
If the purpose is about the speaker, use the first-person command form -(a)y instead: Kech qolmay deb, erta turdim (I got up early so that I would not be late). For we, use -(a)ylik deb.

3. Other ways to say so that
-ish uchun (in order to) is the most general purpose form: Oʻzbek tilini oʻrganish uchun kitob oldim. -gani goes with verbs of motion. The bookish word toki can also introduce a purpose.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out deb.

    Bolalar eshitsin, baland gapirdi.
    Bolalar eshitsin deb, baland gapirdi.

Without deb, the two parts are separate sentences: Let the children hear. He spoke loudly. deb is what joins the purpose to the action.

  • Using -sin when the goal is about yourself.

    Kech qolmasin deb, erta turdim.
    Kech qolmay deb, erta turdim.

The speaker means so that I would not be late. -sin is about him or her, so this would mean so that he would not be late. For yourself, use -(a)y deb.
