Iltimos

Please

Level 1

Iltimos = please. Put it first or last in a request: Iltimos, kiring, Bir choy, iltimos.

How It Works

Where it goes. Put iltimos at the start or at the end of the request, with a comma.

  • Iltimos, sekinroq gapiring. (Please speak more slowly.)
  • Bir choy, iltimos. (One tea, please.)

The verb. A full request uses a polite command: gapir- + -ing → gapiring, ber- + -ing → bering. Do not use the dictionary form in -moq here. In a shop or café you can skip the verb and just name the thing: Bir choy, iltimos.

Asking, not offering. Iltimos is only for asking. When you offer or hand something to someone, say Marhamat.

As a noun. iltimos also means a request or a favor: Sizdan bir iltimosim bor. (I have a favor to ask you.)

Examples (6)

  1. Iltimos, sekinroq gapiring.

    Please speak more slowly.

Word by Word: Please, more-slowly speak.

sekinroq is sekin (slow) + -roq (more).

  2. Bir choy, iltimos.

    One tea, please.

Word by Word: One tea, please.

In a café, the verb can be left out.

  3. Iltimos, yana bir marta ayting.

Please say it one more time.

Word by Word: Please, again one time say.

  4. Iltimos, eshikni yoping.

    Please close the door.

Word by Word: Please, door-the close.

  5. Menga suv bering, iltimos.

    Please give me some water.

Word by Word: To-me water give, please.

iltimos can also close the request.

  6. Sizdan bir iltimosim bor.

I have a favor to ask you.

    Word by Word: From-you one my-request there-is.

Here iltimos is a noun: a request.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form in -moq instead of a command.

    Iltimos, sekinroq gapirmoq.
    Iltimos, sekinroq gapiring.

A request needs a command form. The -moq form only names the action, like "to speak".

  • Saying iltimos when you hand something to someone.

    Iltimos, choy.
    Marhamat, choy.

Iltimos, choy means "Tea, please": you are asking for tea. When you give someone tea, say Marhamat (here you are).
