Days, Months and Dates
The days run from dushanba (Monday) to yakshanba (Sunday), and the months from yanvar to dekabr. Both are written in lowercase. A date looks like 5-mart, read beshinchi mart.
How It Works
Days of the week (hafta kunlari):
- dushanba Monday, seshanba Tuesday, chorshanba Wednesday, payshanba Thursday
- juma Friday, shanba Saturday, yakshanba Sunday
Months (oylar): yanvar, fevral, mart, aprel, may, iyun, iyul, avgust, sentabr, oktabr, noyabr, dekabr. Note the spellings sentabr, oktabr and noyabr.
Lowercase. Unlike English, Uzbek writes days and months with a small letter unless they start a sentence: Biz dushanba kuni uchrashamiz (We will meet on Monday). A holiday name is different: its first word takes a capital, as in Mustaqillik kuni (Independence Day).
Writing a date. A number in digits followed by a hyphen is an ordinal (see raqam + chiziqcha (tartib son)). So 5-mart is read beshinchi mart, and 2024-yil is read ikki ming yigirma toʻrtinchi yil. A full date starts with the year: 2024-yil 5-mart (March 5, 2024).
On, in, from and to.
- On a day: dushanba kuni (on Monday), 5-mart kuni or 5-martda (on March 5).
- In a month or year: mart oyida or martda (in March), 2024-yilda (in 2024).
- From ... to: dushanbadan jumagacha (from Monday to Friday); see -gacha.
Asking. Bugun haftaning qaysi kuni? (What day of the week is it today?) and Bugun nechanchi sana? (What is the date today?).
